Place was not particularly important to me until I moved away from a home that I loved to a place that is almost the complete opposite of that. I love to travel for long periods of time but I am not the type that is easily up-rooted from my permanent location and made to adapt to a new situation. I have lived in Baltimore for two years and I have barely begun to know anything about it because I am still not completely adjusted to living in a new place. By experiencing this new system that requires moving back and forth between what is supposed to be my permanent home, but is actually just my parents home, and a temporary living situation I have learned that I am not at all suited to continuous moving or impermanent working and living spaces. The inability tom plan for things in the distant future because Im not sure where I will be is distressing and makes me feel like a sort of nomad who shouldnt bother making connections or plans because I will have to leave them. I often feel incredibly displaced and out of context.
The body of work I propose to work through this semester is a series of paintings, drawings and possibly some other products that will explore this idea of a mentally nomadic life. I have a character who is not fully fleshed out, who I think of as highly autobiographical but not a self portrait, and I want her to go on a journey of discovery that I can not go on myself. Her journey reflects my own desire to explore new places where I could settle permanently and feel comfortably stable. She will at once reflect my current state of constant moving and help to assuage that feeling of instability by traveling far and wide without obligations or costs or objectives in life. She will be my escape, my method of exploring my past as related to location and eventually she will find a new place away from her home to build a life, and I wont feel like that is so impossible.

"Terror is as much a part of the concept of truth as runniness is of the concept of jam. We wouldn't like jam if it didn't, by its very nature, ooze. We wouldn't like truth if it wasn't sticky, if, from time to time, it didn't ooze blood." -Baudrillard
